How to Style a Mantle
A fireplace can instantly elevate any living space. It creates a warm, cozy atmosphere perfect for relaxing winter nights. However, a fireplace mantle can be tricky to style. You want to strike a balance of functionality and style while keeping it visually appealing. Look no further because we have some tips and tricks on how to easily style your mantle and create a cozy living space.
1. Start with a clean slate
The first step to styling your mantle is to clear it off entirely. This will give you a fresh start and help you see your mantle as if for the first time. Take this opportunity to look around at the existing colors and textures in your space. How can the mantle accessories harmonize with the rest of your space? Once you have a clean mantle, then you can start styling it.
2. Use the rule of three
The rule of three is a time-honored principle in design that can be used when styling your mantle. The idea is to group items in threes to create a balanced and visually appealing look. For instance, you could use a trio of candles of varying heights, a group of books, and a vase of flowers to create a visual appeal. Notice in the image above we have used three groupings of objects (the candle holders, photograph, and circular sculptures).
3. Consider Scale
When arranging items on your mantle, it is essential to consider the scale. You can use larger items like a mirror or art piece to anchor your display and then fill in with smaller items. Arrange the larger items first, and then add the smaller items around it. You can mix and match items like candlesticks, small plants, and vases to make the mantle visually interesting.
4. Add some texture
Texture is a great way to add depth and interest to your mantle. You can use different materials like glass, ceramic, and wood to create textural interest. Consider repurposing items like vintage books, pottery pieces, and woven baskets to create a cohesive look. Texture can make the room feel cozy and collected.
5. Stay Seasonal
Finally, consider the season when styling your mantle. Incorporating seasonal elements like boughs of evergreen, pinecones, and ornaments during the holidays can add a fun and festive flair. Natural elements like buds of flowers or dried leaves can make great decor, and their colors can quickly brighten up your living space.
